Best Tau Fu Fah in IPOH

Best TAU FU FAH in IPOH

Slithery, sweet and smooth, Tau Fu Fah a.k.a douhua (in Mandarin) is a Chinese dessert made with very soft tofu that is served with a clear sweet syrup infused with typically ginger or brown sugar. It is often consumed by Malaysians as a dessert, tea time treat and even as a body coolant to tackle the dry weather.

According to Lonely Planet, Perak's finest colonial architecture stands side by side with rickety kedai kopi (coffee shops) in chameleonic Ipoh. The capital of Perak is flanked by towering white cliffs, some with magnificent cave temples pocketed in the limestone. Sliced into old and new towns by the Kinta River, Ipoh charms with its street art and street food – rather like a languid version of George Town.

Other than being famous for their chicken bean sprout rice and white coffee, tau fu fah is also one of the reasons why the town is often packed with tourists from all over Malaysia as well as other neighboring countries.

Being a local Ipohan girl, here are the 3 best tau fu fah in Ipoh! Ofcourse, I would prefer #3, read below to find out why!

1. Funny Mountain

This legendary tau fu fa shop is considered the most popular tau fu fah shop in Ipoh due to its taste and smooth texture. However, watch out for the crazy number of tourists (and locals) that visit this place as it is strategically located at the heart of all tourist spots (alongside Ipoh famous chicken rice shops, biscuit  shops and salted chicken shops). Visiting the area itself is difficult due to the jam.  Hence, this shop offers take away by just calling/honking from your car OR you can even choose to have it served to you in the air-conditioning comforts of your vehicle. Here, I decided to dabao (take away) because...... I just wanna eat it at home.

Opening Hours: 10am – 7.30pm
Location: 50, Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri, Taman Jubilee, 30300 Ipoh, Negeri Perak

Taste: ✰✰✰✰
Price: ✰✰✰
Portion: ✰✰✰
Environment: ✰✰
Overall: ✰✰✰✰

2. Woong Kee, Jalan Yang Kalsom

This tau fu fah shop is known to be an equal rival of Funny Mountain. They serve a greater variety of tau fu fah such as with grass jelly, shaved peanuts, red bean toppings, glutinous rice balls, chrysanthemum syrup in addition to the original and ginger syrups. Furthermore, it is served in larger portion compared to Funny Mountain. Similarly, customers can choose to have their tau fu fah served in their own vehicle, take away or even enjoy sitting in their aesthetic bar-like stools.

Opening Hours: 11am – 7pm
Location: 32-38A (Bawah), Jalan Ali Pitchay, (Off Jalan Yang Kalsom) Ipoh

Taste: ✰✰✰✰
Price: ✰✰✰✰✰
Portion: ✰✰✰✰
Environment: ✰✰✰✰
Overall: ✰✰✰✰

3. Woong Kee, Bercham

Woong Kee BERCHAM is the original tau fu fah shop in Ipoh which has now expanded from being a small roadside stall to having different branches; 2 in Bercham, Woong Kee Jalan Yang Kalsom (as mentioned above) and even one in SS15, Subang Jaya (known as Dao). This humble stall is often visited by locals Ipoh people who would avoid long queues and crowds. It is also strategically located at Bercham Wai Sik Gai (food street) along with other stalls that sells all sort of biscuits, delicacies, laksa etc.

Opening Hours: 12pm - 10pm
Location: 291, Jalan Bercham, Taman Desa Kencana, 31400 Ipoh, Negeri Perak

Taste: ✰✰✰✰
Price: ✰✰✰✰✰
